Be Glad and Rejoice!

Scripture

Zephaniah 3:14-17

Over the years, we have gathered with friends and family to celebrate birthdays, holidays, the changing seasons, and important milestones. Celebration, joy, and laughter are essential to our health, well-being, and our connection with others.

But those are occasions. We mark them on a calendar and wait for them. Most days are not occasions. Most days bring toil, strain, broken relationships, and struggle.

Where do we turn on days like those?

Sing, Daughter Zion; shout aloud, Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away your punishment, He has turned back your enemy. The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you; never again will you fear any harm.

Zephaniah 3:14-15 (NIV)

The prophets delivered the Lord’s word to a people who had turned away from Him. Yet even in those harsh messages, He watched and waited for His people to return. Zephaniah is a hard book — two and a half chapters of warning come before these verses, spoken to a people who had every reason to expect judgment, not singing. And then the tone turns completely.

The Command Comes First

Zephaniah begins with four commands — sing, shout, be glad, rejoice — and only afterward tells us why. Four directives before a single reason.

That matters on the mornings when rejoicing is the last thing we feel like doing. The command does not wait for our circumstances to improve, or for our feelings to catch up. It rests on what is already true.

This is His call to return to a relationship with the King of Israel. You are His beloved daughter, His beloved son.

What the Lord Has Already Done

Two things, both finished: He has taken away your punishment, and He has turned back your enemy. Not will take away. Not may turn back. The verbs are settled. Accomplished.

My friend, whatever is still unsettled in your life this week, these two are complete. Your punishment — paid in full. Your enemy — turned back.

On that day they will say to Jerusalem, “Do not fear, Zion; do not let your hands hang limp. The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:16-17 (NIV)

The Mighty Warrior Who Saves

The reason: The Lord your God is with you. The King of Israel, the King of kings, is present. He stands with you. He fights for you. He is the Mighty Warrior who saves.

This is the God whose love endures forever — a refrain repeated twenty-six times in a single psalm (Psalm 136) — and who promises never to leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6).

He Rejoices Over You with Singing

The passage ends with an unexpected statement. We might expect it to close with our singing — we were commanded to sing in verse 14. Instead, it closes with the Lord singing.

He will take great delight in you. He will rejoice over you with singing. Sit with that. The God who saves you sings over you.

Read verse 17 aloud, slowly, putting your own name where it says you.

The Lord your God is with [your name],

the Mighty Warrior who saves [your name].

He will take great delight in [your name];

in His love He will no longer rebuke [your name],

but will rejoice over [your name] with singing.

Which of these is hardest for you to believe today — that He is with you, that He fights for you, or that He delights in you?

He is already rejoicing over you. What would today look like if you believed that before you did anything else?

This week, when the toil and strain return — and they will — come back to these words.

Trust in the Mighty Warrior.

He delights in you.

Rest in His love.

He sings joyfully over you.
