The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made.
Psalm 145:8-9 (NIV)
Jonah obeyed the Lord, went to Nineveh, and proclaimed the message God told him to deliver: “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown (Jonah 3:4 NIV). The people of Nineveh fasted and put on sackcloth. When word reached the king’s ears, he declared a royal decree.
But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from His fierce anger so that we will not perish.
Jonah 3:8-9 (NIV)
Does God relent or change His mind after His word was spoken by His prophet?
- Numbers 23:19: “God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind.”
- 1 Samuel 15:29: “The Glory of Israel does not lie or change His mind; for He is not a human being, that He should change His mind.”
- Malachi 3:6: “I the LORD do not change.”
However, God observed the change in the hearts of the Ninevites and relented. God has often responded to human repentance with mercy, canceling the punishments His prophets had announced.
When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He relented and did not bring on them the destruction He had threatened.
Jonah 3:10 (NIV)
