Week 1 – John’s Gospel

SHOW NOTES: The Gospel of John is filled with rich truths and it’s profound theologically. In these first verses, the reader is introduced to the Word, the Life, and the Light. The Word (Logos), the Son exists from all eternity. The Word became flesh – Jesus – and lived on the earth. When we receive Him and believe in His name, He has the right to make us children of God. This is a personal relationship with the One, True God. “From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.” – John 1:16

SCRIPTURE PASSAGE: John 1:1-18

SHOW NOTES: John the Baptist was called to serve God and fulfill a very specific assignment. He was a voice crying in the wilderness, telling people to prepare the way of the Lord. His testimony was truthful and bold. John acknowledged that he was not worthy to even untie the Messiah’s sandal thong. Through his own admission, John says that he did not recognize Him. But God revealed Jesus’ identity and John proclaims, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” This faithful witness calls us to prepare our hearts and look to the Lamb of God. This is Jesus. This is the Son of God.

SHOW NOTES: Jesus calls us to a personal relationship with Him. In today’s lesson, several men choose to follow Jesus as His disciples. We will consider two important questions – What do I seek? & Who do I follow? The Word became flesh and lived among men and women. He is the Lamb of God. TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE PASSAGE: John 1:35-51

SHOW NOTES: Celebrations mark important happenings in our lives. In Jewish culture, wedding feasts last for several days – sometimes up to 1 week. That’s a lot of food and wine to provide for your guests. Hospitality is a big deal in the Jewish culture and throughout the Middle East. Jesus knows how to celebrate and He invites us to participate with Him in abundant life. His desire is to fill your cup until it overflows with joy, grace, faith, and hope!

SHOW NOTES: Jesus travels up to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. When He goes to the temple, Jesus drives out the money changers and those selling animals for sacrifice. He demonstrates His zeal and exclaims, “Stop making My Father’s house a place of business.” Confronted by the religious leaders, Jesus shared the message of His future death and resurrection. These words were not understood at the time, but Jesus’ disciples remember His words several years later, following His resurrection. During these days in Jerusalem, many people observed His signs and began to believe in His name.

SHOW NOTES: Did you ever sit outside around a firepit and share a deep conversation with a friend or family member? If so, you may have asked questions, shared your heart, and even shed some tears as you talked together. In John 3, Nicodemus comes in the night and asks Jesus to answer some questions that are troubling him. Jesus offers the answers not only to life but to life eternal. Jesus says, “whoever believes in Me shall not perish, but have eternal life.” He is waiting patiently. Will you come and believe in the name of Jesus?
